Terumo Aortic is a global medical device company, dedicated to developing solutions for aortic and peripheral vascular disease. Major investment in their manufacturing site in Renfrewshire, to provide state of the art new manufacturing facilities, reached a new milestone with the completion of the new phase 2 atrium and Graft and Thoraflex extension in June 2022.

Lee Boyd provided architectural services to the Contractor, Thomas Johnstone, who were commissioned by Terumo Aortic to deliver an early concept design for an extension to their existing facility: to provide over 2000m2 of additional floor space for the future fit-out of the expanded production facilities and a new two storey atrium to link the existing site facilities and provide a more visible entrance to the site.

Close collaboration with the design team and a stage warrant process allowed the works to be delivered within programme and budget. A fire engineering solution for the atrium was developed by the Consultants Jensen Hughes, building services design was undertaken by Harley Haddow and the structural design for the new development was designed by the Engineers Will Rudd Davidson.

The completed atrium is a bright and airy space, with a new entrance and reception facility and a glazed bridge providing a practical new link to existing accommodation at first floor level. The double-height volume of the new atrium provides breathing space within the core of the manufacturing facility and improves opportunities for meeting, collaboration, and display. It has been commended by Terumo Aortic as a very visual sign of their commitment and ambition for the site.

Elsewhere on the site Lee Boyd and TJL also supported a wide range of alterations to the existing building fabric, including improvements to accessibility, fire protection and expanded office and support accommodations.

“As a growing company we value the agile and innovative approach which Lee Boyd has consistently provided to our site development programme.

“Over many years and many different projects, the team at Lee Boyd have delivered first class service. The expertise of the team has allowed us to continue delivering our life saving medical devices to patients around the world while we expand our manufacturing facility.

“The most visible example of our expansion is our new atrium entrance which has exceeded our own expectations and provides a very tangible demonstration of our ambition to our Associates every day and any visitor to the facility.”
