St Mark’s Episcopal Church is an elegant Georgian, Neo Classical church, set back from the High Street in Portobello. With ailling fabric and a tired interior, the B listed church was much in need of conservation and refurbishment.

Collaborating closely with conservation architect Ed Eastham of Taft, a scheme of work was set out that would repair the external fabric, improve accessibility at the entrance and completely overhaul the interior.

Conservation repairs were made to the stonework, leadwork and roof, one which had its slates replaced. Most of the stained glass was carefully removed and repaired by specialists.

An new curved ramp wraps around the stepped entrance rotunda following its radius, in a combination of stone and steel, alongside a new set of matching stone steps on the axis of the church.

Internally the changes are dramatic:
– Repaired ceilings to nave and dome with new chandeliers
– A new timber floor in the nave
– Projecting pods under the balcony to provide space for a new AWC and kitchen servery
– Remodelled chancel and steps in curved hardwood
– Comprehensive redecoration in bold new colours

In addition, thermal improvements have been made. The large attic has been insulated and the nave windows have seamless, almost invisible secondary glazing.

The level of transformation has been significant, ensuring a sustainable future for the building and an attractive space for church and community use.
