Invited Competition 2013

Competition entry to extend and reorganise the Kilmartin Museum in Argyll on the West coast of Scotland.

With a very ambitious brief and an extremely complex and sensitive site, this proposal took the radical step of burying a large proportion of the proposed extension underground, principally the new exhibition floor.

Kilmartin Glen is a significant site of prehistoric and early Christian activity in Scotland and our proposal attempts to provide as many visual links to this landscape as possible, providing direct connections for many of the artefacts found in the valley. By using an under used garden space to the south of the main house, our proposal avoids compromising the foreground to the museum complex or the need for complex links between the house and the current reception and café building.
